 Design Information

Designer: Philippe Apeloig, www.apeloig.com
Development: Nouvelle Noire
Year: 2013

Philippe Apeloig designed the ABF typeface as part of a new corporate identity for the Association des Bibliothécaires de France (the French Librarians Association), which holds annual Congresses, each with a different theme. Both the logo and the name of the typeface are the same: ABF. The font is composed of three distinct styles: “ABF Petit”, “ABF Silhouette”, and “ABF Linéaire”. It evolved over time, adapting to the conferences’ changing themes.
The theme on which the ABF Petit, font was derived (the first font of this typeface family to be created) was “Demain la bibliothèque” (Libraries of Tomorrow). Utilizing the concept of an aerial view of a library floor plan, the letterforms suggest not only worktables, shelves, and chairs but the research tools of the digital age, monitors and tablets.
The atmosphere of the library is conveyed using only a few shapes, primarily rectangles and rounded ovals. The typeface is particularly interactive. When one scans the letters across the page, one gets the impression of readers moving through stacks or seated at tables.
