Nouvelle Noire is a type design and development studio based in Zurich, Switzerland. Working in a traditional way, we design type with an emphasis on modern technique and technical options. Our work is deeply rooted in the traditional practice of type design. All of our designs are developed with the awareness of type history in unison with a forward thinking vision of contemporary type design.

About Nouvelle Noire
The name Nouvelle Noire is the French allusion to newspaper printing, while in English it translates to 'The black novel'. The name refers to the spread of information and knowledge by means of type. Since early times, the spread is closely connected to writing and typefaces. It also refers to the black ink in which the letters are written or printed with. So it's not surprising that the art of writing, punchcutting and designing type is called 'The Black Art'. Today, black still remains the most popular colour for written language, which is so embedded in our psyche that it has spread across new media and digital. Type is far more than just a combination of written or printed letters on a sheet of paper or displayed on a screen. There is playfulness between printed and blank areas, light and dark, positive and negative space, forms and counter forms. In western culture, the letter is the smallest unit of the written language, it is building block of human communication and this is the idea that Nouvelle Noire is based on.

Nouvelle Noire is founded and managed by Clovis Vallois and Anton Studer.
We speak fluent german, swiss german, french and english. Please do not hesitate to contact us.

About the Apeloig Type Library
The Apeloig Type Library is a compilation of ten typefaces created by Philippe Apeloig during the past twenty years of the designer’s outstanding typographic creation. Through this library, Apeloig’s distinctive approach to letters and type is made visible. Apeloig conceives the process of type design as a research and play between legibility and forms. His designs are defeating legibility but remain accessible for the viewer. A rich typographic expression and an impressive variety of shapes have emerged from his creations. Originating from orders of posters, book covers or corporate and visual identities, those fonts came to life first as a few letters designed especially for the project. For Philippe Apeloig, Nouvelle Noire has undertaken the development of typefaces from those several existing letters. In the past two years, Nouvelle Noire developed the designs into ten full working fonts. All library fonts support a wide range of western European languages. Opentype features are embedded, in each font, depending on the characteristics of the typeface.
